Man in court after motorcyclist dies in Mansfield lorry crash at crossroads

A man has appeared in court after a 61-year-old motorcyclist died in a crash with a lorry at a busy crossroads in Mansfield. Emergency services were called to the A617/A60 crossroads junction shortly after 4am on July 12, 2023.

Nigel Osler, from Derbyshire, sustained serious injuries and died later that day in hospital, with police saying that his family continue to be supported by specially trained officers. Matthew Wright, aged 45, of Leeson Avenue, Charnock Richard, Chorley, appeared at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Thursday, May 23.

Wright, charged with causing death by dangerous driving, was granted unconditional bail and is next due to appear at Nottingham Crown Court on June 20. Detective Inspector Kate Savage, of the serious collision investigation unit, said: "Since this tragic incident, we have been working hard to understand what happened while continuing to support Mr Osler's family at this very difficult time.

"A man has now been charged as a result of our investigation and is now going through the court process." A number of roads surrounding the area of the incident - including Bellamy Road, Larch Farm and Lichfield Lane - were closed for several hours after the crash.

In a joint statement, Mr Osler's family previously said: "Nigel was a husband, dad, grandad, brother and friend to many. What he went through was truly devastating and the resulting injuries were fatal. He loved his motorbikes and, with his years of experience on the roads, took safety very seriously.

"It is sadly ironic that he was riding to work to start his shift as an HGV driver. We would like to thank those who have shared heart-warming words of support at this incredibly tough time for us all.

"If anything good can come from this, please be more aware on the roads to prevent horrific tragedies like this from happening to others."
