Man dies after car enters water in Chatteris

A man has died after the car he was driving entered the water at Forty Foot Bank near Chatteris on Thursday (June 13). The 35-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

The car, a red Mercedes C220, went into the water at about 11.50am. Emergency services attended and the road was closed while rescue efforts were carried out and the vehicle was recovered.

An East of England Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called just before 12pm on Thursday with reports that a vehicle had gone into water at Forty Foot Bank near Chatteris. Two ambulances, three ambulance officer vehicles, three Hazardous Area Response Team vehicles and the East Anglian Air Ambulance was sent to the scene.

"Sadly, a man was pronounced dead at the scene.”

Cambridgeshire Police is urging anyone who witnessed the incident or may have dashcam footage of the car before the incident to contact the force via its website, quoting incident 172 of June 13.

Anyone without internet access can call 101 and ask to speak to a member of the Road Policing Unit.
