A man has died in a crash involving two cars and two lorries on the M58.

The motorway was closed in both directions between junction 3 near Rainford and junction 4 for Skelmersdale following the crash on Friday, May 17. Emergency services were called to the scene at around 12.53pm. The crash involved two lorries and two cars.

Footage, which the ECHO has chosen not to share, showed one of the lorries go up in flames following the crash. Lancashire Police has today confirmed the driver of one of the cars was pronounced dead at the scene. He is yet to be formerly identified but police believe him to be a man in his 40s.

A large amount of smoke was seen on the carriageway as long delays were reported in the area. National Highways said the motorway would remain closed until around 3.30am on Saturday, May 18.

Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with footage of the incident to contact them.

Sgt Matt Davidson, lead investigation officer with the serious collision investigation unit, said: “First and foremost, my thoughts are with the driver’s family and loved ones at this distressing time."

“This was a difficult and challenging scene for the emergency services who attended, and the carriageway was closed for a substantial time while we investigated the collision and repairs were made to the road.

“I am appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage from either side of the motorway between 12:40pm and 1pm to please contact police on 101, or email SCIU@lancashire.police.uk quoting log 0620 of 17th May 2024."
