A man is fighting for his life in hospital after being hit by a car in Stockport.

The smash happened at the junction of St Matthew's Road and Old Chapel Street in the Edgeley area at around 10.10pm last night (April 23). Emergency services raced to the scene after the 56-year-old man was knocked down.

Police believe a Kia Ceed was travelling south along St Matthew's Road, with the driver planning on turning right onto Old Chapel Street. But as the driver looked to park on Old Chapel Street, the car hit the man.

He was rushed to hospital. He remains there in a critical condition, police said.

A 41-year-old woman was arrested on the scene on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving. An investigation into the incident is now ongoing.

The road was reportedly cordoned off for several hours overnight. Any witnesses are being urged to contact Greater Manchester Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU).
