Alberta's police watchdog will investigate a police shooting in north Edmonton that sent a man to hospital with life-threatening injuries Saturday evening, police say.

Shortly before 7:45 p.m., an on-duty officer found a man with a weapon outside the entrance of a Shell gas station in the Dickinsfield neighbourhood, on the corner of 94th Street and 144th Avenue, Edmonton police said in a news release Sunday.

Police did not specify what type of weapon the man had, but said the officer immediately called for help.

A confrontation eventually ensued, leading to the officer shooting the man, who suffered life-threatening injuries, police say.

Police performed life-saving measures on the man — who police did not identify — until paramedics arrived. He was treated and sent to hospital, where he remains, police say.

No officers were injured; a stun gun was found at the scene, police say.

The Edmonton Police Service has informed the director of law enforcement, who directed the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) to investigate the incident.

ASIRT investigates instances when police may have caused serious injury or death, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.

Edmonton police say they cannot give more information in light of the investigation.
