Eyewitnesses have told of 'traumatic' scenes outside a cafe in Whitefield where a man was left hurt and was rushed to hospital. Emergency services swarmed Radcliffe New Road after police received calls with concerns for the welfare of a man at around 11am on Saturday (April 27).

Witnesses said police officers were seen performing CPR on a man who appeared to be in his thirties, before an air ambulance landed nearby. The incident appears to have taken place outside the Two Birds & One Stone cafe on Radcliffe New Road.

Police said it is an isolated incident involving just the victim and they are not looking for anyone else. The man remains in hospital where he is in a serious condition, GMP said.

Radcliffe New Road remained shut from Bury New Road to Wingate Drive for several hours with forensics officers arriving on the scene at around 3pm. David Reid, who lives in Wingate Drive, heard sirens stop in front of his home before seeing police through his window.

He said: "When I looked out the window, there were some police officers and they were doing CPR on a guy. His shirt was off and they were doing chest compressions.

"Then the air ambulance came and landed at the fire station. It was there 10 to minutes later.

"They were working on him for ages. About 10 minutes."

The M.E.N. has seen an image of an air ambulance on Elms Playing Field. It is not clear whether the man was taken in the helicopter.

Mr Reid added: "I was shocked. It must have been really shocking for everyone in there.

"I thought it was a fight at first. Then I saw them all stood around and the police were pumping his chest."

Another man, who did not share his name, told the M.E.N. that he was driving past the cafe when he saw a man 'covered in blood'. He said that the injured man appeared to be in 'quite a bad way', but he would not accept any help from people who approached him.

According to this eyewitness, an off-duty paramedic was at the scene before an ambulance arrived 10 minutes later. Several police vehicles also attended the scene while the emergency services attempted to perform CPR on the injured man, the eyewitness said.

"When I saw him covered in blood, there were lots of children around so we got out. It was traumatic.

"It's more annoying that me and the few other lads who were there couldn't help him. He was visually quite injured."

Chief Inspector Samantha Jackson of our Bury district said; “Following responding to an incident earlier today on Radcliffe New Road in Bury, we understand the shock and concern this will have raised within the community.

“I would like to provide clarity and reassurance on this, as it is an isolated incident involving one person as the victim and their welfare who is still in a serious condition in hospital.
