Man killed in crash named as 'cherished fiancé' and grandad from Essex

A man who died in a fatal collision in Suffolk has been pictured and named for the first time. The collision occurred on Waldingroad at the junction with Tentree Road at around 12.50pm on May 19.

The incident involved two motorcycles - a black BMW and a Ducati - and, sadly, one of the motorists died at the scene. Subject to confirmation at formal inquest proceedings, he has been identified as Kevin Findlay, from Dedham in Essex.

Suffolk Police, Suffolk Fire and Rescue, air ambulance and ambulance crews were all in attendance at the incident. The other motorcyclist, a man aged in his 40s, was taken to hospital by land ambulance for treatment to injuries and was discharged two days later.

The family of Mr Finlday, 63, said he was a man who "always had time to be the archetypal fun-loving grandad". In a tribute, they said: "Kevin was a much loved and cherished fiancé to Lesley. He was loving and kind to her children Suzannah, James and Caroline and a caring and adored grandfather to their children. They have many fond memories of the fun times they had together.

“Kevin was a loving brother and uncle to Stewart, Carol, Edith and their families and father to Dan and Lois. His many friends and colleagues will also miss him greatly.

"Even though Kevin has left us far too soon he lived a full life, starting his working life as a Royal Navy clearance diver from school. This led him into a long profession as a saturation diver in the North Sea and worldwide.

"Towards the end of his diving career, Kevin successfully set up a business specialising in structural repairs, working mainly for insurance companies. Even though his work kept him busy he always made time for family and friends, particularly in later years when he had numerous holidays with Lesley and with friends. Many were road trips, either by car or motorbike on the continent but also included far afield destinations.

“He always had time to be the archetypical fun-loving grandad and looked forward to having all the grandchildren around. They will remember great times including summer barbeques when he created waterslides in the garden. He loved to see the joy on their faces and hear their laughter.

“A passion that Kevin had throughout his life was motorbiking, he loved his motorbikes. We take comfort knowing that although he left us too soon it was while doing something he loved. We all will find strength and comfort in the memories of the wonderful man he was."

Officers are continuing to appeal for any witnesses to the collision and asking any motorists driving in the area at the time of the incident with a dashcam fitted in their vehicle, to review the footage for any material that may be of assistance.
