Man left with life-changing injuries after Handsworth fire as house left blown out

A man was left with "life-changing injuries" following a severe house fire in Handsworth. The large property, at the junction of Broughton Road and Hamstead Road, was engulfed in the blaze in the early hours of Saturday morning, May 25.

The entire building was affected by the flames with windows blown out and its exterior walls blackened by smoke. Burnt debris was also pictured outside the entrance of the property.

West Midlands Police confirmed to BirminghamLive that a man, 57, is currently being treated in hospital for "life-changing" injuries he sustained in the blaze. The force added that they are treating the fire as arson at this stage.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "A man is being treated in hospital for life changing injuries following a fire at a house on Hamstead Road, Birmingham. We were called by the emergency services at around 5.30am on Saturday 25 May who were dealing with a fire at a house of multiple occupancy.

"A 57-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious injuries which are described as life-changing. Forensic teams have examined the scene to establish a cause for the fire at this stage the fire is being treated as arson. No other occupants of the premises were injured."
