Man taken to hospital after being hit by bus in Newcastle city centre

A man has been taken to hospital after being hit by a bus in Newcastle city centre.

Emergency services were called to John Dobson Street shortly after 1pm on Monday (April, 22), where the incident had occurred. Pictures from the scene showed damage to the front window of the Stagecoach bus, which was travelling towards Newcastle city centre.

Police closed the road, which reopened shortly after 2.30pm. The man in his 20s sustained injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening and he was taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "Shortly before 1.20pm today (Monday) we received a report of a collision involving a bus and a pedestrian on John Dobson Street, Newcastle. Emergency services attended and the male pedestrian, aged in his 20s, was taken to hospital. His injuries are not currently believed to be life-threatening.

"Enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the collision. Anyone with information can contact police via the ‘Report’ page of our website quoting reference NP-20240422-0508."

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 1:13 this afternoon to a road traffic incident on John Dobson Street, Newcastle.

"We dispatched a two vehicles from our Hazardous Area Response Team and a double crewed ambulance. One patient was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary."

Stagecoach confirmed that they are assisting police with their investigations and said: "Our thoughts are with the injured person."
