Man United 3-2 Newcastle United player ratings: Hall and Gordon shine for Magpies at Old Trafford

Newcastle United blew a golden chance to beat Manchester United in the Premier League at Old Trafford for the first time in a decade.

Newcastle started the game in a confident enough mood but then retreated further and further back and looked like a side questioning their own confidence. Newcastle fell behind on 31 minutes after the defence knocked off and Kobbie Mainoo calmly stroked home after being afforded space in the box. Dan Burn came closest to equalising when he headed across the goal-line before Casimero cleared the danger.

The second half saw Anthony Gordon equalise but Man United nudged ahead thanks to Amad Diallo before substitute Rasmus Højlund put the Red Devils in full control. Lewis Hall scored a stunning goal in stoppage time but it was too little, too late.

Man United may be far from the side they once were but they still had enough to beat Newcastle tonight.

Here's how the players rated overall:

Martin Dubravka 5

Made some important saves in the first half but despite being left exposed looked shaky in the second half. With Nick Pope breathing down his neck he may have given Howe an opportunity to make a change.

Kieran Trippier 6

Did not look sharp enough for such a high-octane encounter. Plenty of creativity but not quite close to the levels we know he can deliver.

Emil Krafth 5

Improved after the break but left a gaping hole for the opener.

Dan Burn 7

The skipper battled hard, came close to an equaliser in the first half and had a hand in the Gordon goal.

Lewis Hall 8

Looks like a great signing for Newcastle. Probed going forward and scored a wonder strike.

Sean Longstaff 5

Overran in the middle. Missed a great chance to score.

Bruno Guimaraes 6

A mixed display. But ultimately not able to be the star of the show on the big stage.

Elliot Anderson 6

Did not manage to stamp his authority on the night. Taken off.

Jacob Murphy 6

A great cross for Gordon but then blotted copy book with poor headed clearance.

Anthony Gordon 8

Newcastle's most dangerous player with another goal to boot. Didn't deserve to be on losing side.

Alexander Isak 6

Did not look 100%. Started confidently then dropped deep.

Subs

Joelinton 7 (for Anderson 62)

Made a difference.

Miguel Almiron 5 (for Murphy 62)

Not much impact.

Fabian Schar 6 (for Trippier 62)

Offered some presence but not enough.

Harvey Barnes (for Longstaff 77)

*Subs must play 15 minutes to earn a mark.

Here's how the players rated in the first half:

Martin Dubravka 7

Had to be in his best form to keep his side in it before Kobbie Mainoo opener. Easily the busier of the two keepers.

Kieran Trippier 6

Not 100% fit and his balls down the side have lacked usual fizz.

Emil Krafth 5

Left a gaping hole to allow Mainoo to stroke home.

Dan Burn 7

Came close to an equaliser and at least looks awake.

Lewis Hall 7

Has had some good runs down the left and sent in a low effort.

Sean Longstaff 6

Has been overran in the middle.

Bruno Guimaraes 6

Not at the races so far.

Elliot Anderson 6

Has been involved in a couple of good moments.

Jacob Murphy 6

One decent cross to pick out Burn.

Anthony Gordon 7

Has caused a few issues when Newcastle get him on the ball.

Alexander Isak 6

Other than one early that went wide, has dropped deep.
