Antony has claimed that his celebration towards Coventry City's players on Sunday was due to the "not nice" treatment towards Manchester United's fans by a Sky Blues player.

The Brazilian winger has been heavily criticised after taunting Coventry's players moments after Rasmus Hojlund netted the winning spot-kick against Mark Robins' side. Coventry fought back from 3-0 down to level the match before losing on penalties after extra-time.

A photo has since emerged on social media appearing to show Haji Wright taunting United's fans after scoring his penalty during the shootout. And Antony has appeared to claim this was behind his reaction after mentioning how United fans were treated by "their player."

"Coventry proved why they reached the semi-final," Antony said on X, formerly known as Twitter. "We seeked this spot in the final for our fans and we achieved. The way our fans were treated by their player was not nice and I, in the heat of the moment, I've reacted to the provocations in a natural defence of my club!"

United manager Erik ten Hag has since called the reaction to his side's hard-fought win against Coventry "embarrassing" and "a disgrace."

"Football is about results," he said on Tuesday. "We made it to the final and deserved it. We lost control for 20 minutes and were very lucky in the end but we made it to the final. That is a huge achievement.

"The reaction from you [the media] was embarrassing. Twice [two FA Cup finals] in two years, it is magnificent. For me as manager, four cup finals in four years. The comments are a disgrace.”
