The race for the Champions League took yet another twist as Newcastle thrashed Tottenham before Manchester United slipped up against Bournemouth in another boost for Unai Emery's Aston Villa side.

Eddie Howe's Newcastle ran out 4-0 winners at St James' Park thanks to an Alexander Isak brace as well as goals from Anthony Gordon and Fabian Schar. It's a result that moved the Magpies up to sixth place and United's dire 2-2 draw at Bournemouth kept it that way because of the Red Devils' far worse goal difference.

Usually, only four teams from the Premier League qualify for the Champions League each season. However, this year it could be very different. That's because Europe's elite competition will increase from 32 to 36 clubs, with two nations due to contribute five clubs based on their league finish.

With all that in mind, here's look at the Champions League race in the Premier League as well as the coefficient latest from across Europe...

Hopes of a fifth-placed Premier League side earning a Champions League spot were all but dashed on Thursday after Liverpool and West Ham both lost in their Europa League quarter-final first legs. Next season's edition of the Champions League will expand from 32 to 36 clubs, with two nations set to offer five clubs based on their league finish.

The identify of those will be determined by their respective nations' European performances this season, with the Premier League only third-best after the quarter-final ties across the three UEFA competitions. Italy and Germany are currently in the top two, meaning that England are expected miss out on the additional Champions League spot - as things stand.

In order to find the relevant 'European Performance Score', the total coefficient points attainted by clubs from one league is divided by the number of representatives from that competition. After the week's results, Italy sit top on 18.428, while Germany remain second with 16.785, just ahead of England on 16.750.

It means that at the moment, the Premier League won't have five Champions League places. That could all change, though, with Arsenal, Manchester City, Aston Villa, Liverpool and West Ham all eyeing places in the semi-final of their relevant competitions - but we'll certainly have a clearer idea by the end of next week.
