King of big dinners, Man vs Food star has been in Lancashire. Chorley to be precise.

And what dish can out fair county offer the man who has eaten more than most? Hotpot, of course.

The American presenter and TV favourite took the unlikely visit to the Lancashire town as part of his new Food Network series, Adam Richman Eats Britain. In the latest episode of the series which aired on Monday (April 22), he rocked up at Bees Kitchen and Deli on Fleet Street.

Adam spoke with chef Mike who considers the age-old Lancastrian delicacy as one of his "specialities". Talking about what makes a good hotpot, Mike went through the steps and recipe for Adam in the kitchen of the Chorley deli.

Starting off with frying onions in a frying pan, Mike explains the difference between hotpot and other, similar delicacies. He said: "A Lancashire hotpot would always have lamb.

"In Liverpool, the dish scouse would always have beef." Noting the distinction off the bat, Mike shows the American foodie where the hotpot meat is sourced from.

The diced and minced lamb are from a local butcher in Chorley - two different types of the same meat, which the chef says makes the dish "unctuous." Seasoning it all with salt, pepper and rosemary, stock is added and so are the vegetables, including local carrots, swede and leeks.

As the stew simmers, Adam describes the history of the hotpot, saying it had become popular in the northwest of England during the textile industry boom. As workers built up an appetite, the hotpot filling could be left cooking and simmering for as long a needed.

Having reduced down and layered with thinly-sliced potatoes, Adam had his first try of Lancashire hotpot, served with a side of beetroot and red cabbage. Trying his first mouthful, Adam said: "If meat sauce, stew, the filling of a good pie and roast potatoes had a baby.

"The crispiness of the potatoes on top is like the best contrast ever. Then the potatoes that are inside are sopping up the gravy."

Overall, he says "that was absolutely terrific." Moving away from Lancashire, Adam visits Manchester to try a bakery owned by a Brazilian couple. Here, he tries their take on the "humble sausage roll."
