Manchester Airport has announced a new direct route to one of Europe’s smallest countries. Luxair has now launched flights between Manchester and Luxembourg.

The service will run three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. With a flight time of just under two hours, it’s the perfect destination for a long weekend away.

Announcing the route this week on X, formerly known as Twitter, Manchester Airport said: “@LuxairAirlines have officially landed at @manairport and are ready to whisk you away to #Luxembourg up to 3x weekly! T1 was buzzing with excitement, as passengers were greeted with balloons, light refreshments, cake and football scarves.”

Surrounded by Belgium, France and Germany, Luxembourg is the seventh smallest country in Europe, covering an area of 2,586 square kilometres. The capital city also shares the same name.

While it’s not a traditional tourist destination, Luxembourg offers a brilliant alternative if you’re looking for somewhere off the beaten track. The city itself is packed full of pretty buildings, while the old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Thanks to its compact size the city is easy to navigate and walkable. It’s actually split over two levels with ‘the Corniche’ offering spectacular views across the city and of the river that flows through it.

As you’d expect for a country in the heart of Europe, Luxembourg is home to dozens of magical castles, including the majestic Vianden Castle which sits atop a hill, perched above lush green forest. It's one of the largest fortified castles west of the Rhine and has an appearance reminiscent of Hogwarts from Harry Potter.

Luxembourg is also a perfect destination for outdoors-lovers. It boasts one of the densest networks of hiking trails in Europe which take you through its breathtaking countryside.
