A Manchester Airport boss has issued a "sincere apology" after a power cut has caused flight cancellation and severe delays.

All flights from Terminal 1 and 2 have been cancelled after a power cut at around 6.30am on Sunday, June 23. Manchester Airport's managing director, Chris Woodroofe, shared an apology on X, formerly Twitter.

He said: "I have just stepped away from my incident response team to bring this message. First of all it is an apology. My sincere apologies, personal apologies to every single passenger that has been impacted by what has gone on at Manchester Airport today.

"There was a big power spike in our electrical system due to a failure earlier on this morning and that's damaged some really key equipment from our departure security and our departure baggage systems, so that has meant Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 have not been able to depart aircraft today.

"As a result, we have not been able to have those aircrafts land either as arrivals as there has been no space to park those aircrafts on the airfield. We are working very closely with our airlines to seek to recover the operations and understand what passengers can be rebooked onto future flights."

Mr Woodroofe thanked the airport's airline partners, his team and staff while working under "very difficult circumstances". He added normal service should resume tomorrow.

He said: "The good news we very much expect this to be recovered over the afternoon and evening, so we're back to normal operations tomorrow."

Passengers due to travel from Terminal 1 or 2 today are advised not to come to the airport and to stay in touch with their airlines. The airport added people due to fly from Terminal 3 should come to the airport as normal unless advised otherwise by their airline but could be affected by delays.

It also said disruption means some baggage may not be on those flights and it will work with airlines and handling partners to reunite affected passengers with their luggage as soon as possible.
