Passengers at Manchester Airport are facing travel chaos as all flights departing are either cancelled or having severe delays after a power cut in the local area.

In a statement released at 6.30am today, the airport said the issue - which occurred in the early hours of the morning - had caused "widespread disruption" which is affecting flights from Terminals 1 and 2.

"Passengers due to fly from Terminal 3 should come to the airport as normal unless advised otherwise by their airline, but could be affected by delays," Manchester Airport advised.

One delayed passenger who was due to fly with Jet2 told the ECHO this morning: "We're on our way to Faro but the flight time has been and gone. We're not really sure what is happening but some flights are beginning to be checked in manually. None of the baggage belts are working due to the power outage. The Jet2 staff are doing their best but there's not a lot of communication from the airport apart from a repeated announcement that there is a delay and things will be back to normal 'as soon as possible'.

On their website Jet2 said: "We would like to make you aware that there is a power outage that is affecting all terminals at Manchester Airport.

"For flights departing from Manchester today, we are expecting delays during check-in and security screening at the airport. All Jet2.com flights are due to operate as scheduled. Please ensure your contact details are up to date in Manage My Booking and our dedicated Operations teams are working hard behind the scenes at our UK-based HQ to get you on your way as soon as possible.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Our Friendly Jet2.com Red Team will be on hand to assist you."

The passenger added: "Flights they have called through at Jet2 terminal one are Dalaman, Preveza and Athens. They say it's an issue throughout the airport but it looks like some other airlines are faring better."

We will keep you updated as we learned more.
