All flights from two terminals at Manchester Airport have been grounded after a "major power cut" caused massive queues and hampered baggage processing.

Manchester Airport announced that terminals 1 and 2 would halt departures "until further notice" via a social media update on Sunday afternoon.

Passengers scheduled to leave from these terminals were instructed not to come to the airport and to reach out to their airlines for current details.

Travellers departing from terminal three were encouraged to proceed to the airport as usual, barring any airline-specific advisories, despite some earlier flights being delayed.

There were reports of passengers boarding planes only to find their checked-in bags had not made it onboard.

EasyJet, operating out of terminal one, experienced "very long queues" at security and issues with processed hold luggage, restricting passengers to carry-on bags only.

EasyJet extended apologies for the inconvenience caused by these disruptions, albeit they are beyond their control, stating: "We are doing all we can and working closely with the airport team to minimise the disruption."

Some incoming flights had to be rerouted, with an Etihad Airways service from Abu Dhabi redirected to Birmingham Airport.

Manchester Airport has apologised for the disruption, intent on resuming regular operations swiftly.

A spokesperson for Virgin Atlantic commented: "Following a site-wide power outage at Manchester Airport, baggage systems are currently not operational."

They added, "Our teams are working closely with the airport authorities and are keeping our customers up to date with the latest information."

The spokesperson also noted, "Virgin Atlantic flights are currently departing but may be subject to minor delays."
