Lucy Powell has swept to victory in the general election contest for her Manchester Central seat securing nearly two-thirds of the vote. The result comes on an excellent night for Labour who will form the next government. Ms Powell, who has represented the area since 2012, can now expect to be a key player in that new Labour government.

Heading into the election, she was shadow Leader of the House of Commons, meaning she is likely to join a raft of Greater Manchester figures — like deputy leader Angela Rayner — at the heart of government.

In Manchester Central, Ms Powell won 63.6 per cent of the vote — a decrease of nearly seven per cent compared to her 2019 figure.

“Change is coming and change is happening tonight,” said Ms Powell in her acceptance speech.

“It’s very exciting and something we have worked very, very hard for. People are crying out for change and we must deliver that change. It’s a huge responsibility and I will work for that.”

In second place was the Green Party’s Ekua Bayunu, who secured 6,387 votes, or 20.1 percent. Ms Bayunu was a Green party councillor in the Hulme ward until May, when she lost her seat. She was initially elected as a Labour councillor before defecting.

In third place was Reform’s David Brown, with 4,760 votes. Turnout was just 46.8 percent in the seat, a significant fall of 10.1 percent compared to 2019 figures.
