Manchester Marathon 2021 has been moved to October due to Covid-19

From Runner's World

  • The rescheduled 2020 Manchester Marathon was cancelled in July.

  • The 2021 Manchester Marathon, due to take place in April has been moved to Sunday 10 October, a week after the 2021 London Marathon.

  • Organisers have also announced a virtual event will take place this October.

The 2021 Manchester Marathon will now take place on Sunday 10 October, rather than on the original April date. In a statement, race organisers said, 'The priority of the Manchester Marathon is to always ensure a safe and enjoyable event for the many runners, supporters, crew, suppliers and of course the local community.

'The new date will give organisers the opportunity to do this, and offer the same incredible experience that has seen popularity boom in recent years, doubling in size, and becoming the fourth most popular marathon in Europe with up to 30,000 runners.'

Nick Rusling, CEO of organisers Human Race, added, 'A massive part of the Manchester Marathon experience is the whole city coming together to create an unforgettable atmosphere across the weekend. At the moment, creating something on that scale early in 2021 would be a risk, so we are delighted that we could find a new date that will allow us to proceed with confidence and excitement.'

Places in the October 2021 Manchester Marathon will be limited, as 20,000 of the 2020 runners decided to defer their place when the race was cancelled. A small number of places will be released in October 2020.

As well as the news of the new 2021 date, Manchester Marathon organisers have released details on their new 'In Your Own Time' virtual event, which will take place this October. Runners who didn't have a spot in the 2020 race can sign up for £15 and complete a virtual marathon during October. Finishers will receive a Ron Hill finisher's t-shirt and a medal. There are 2o,ooo spaces in total and runners can sign up on the website now.
