A new restaurant in the city centre will be handing out hundreds of free Wagyu steaks on Tuesday ahead of its official opening this week.

Flat Iron, situated within the Grade II-listed 200 Deansgate building, will be giving diners a chance to try out its steak offerings a day early as part of the celebratory preview night.

The restaurant is already a popular name outside of Manchester having launched with 13 restaurants across the country, including locations in London and Leeds. Its Deansgate venue is the first in the city-region.

Flat Iron’s concise menu is primarily centred around one signature £14 piece of meat - the featherblade cut - which is known for its flavour and tenderness. But, on Tuesday night (July 2), people will be able to try their special Wagyu, which is normally priced at £19 and cooked via a bespoke charcoal grill.

Operating on a first-come first-served basis from 5pm, the steakhouse will be handing out 500 free Wagyu steaks to give people a chance to try it out for themselves before officially opening on July 3.

Featuring a sides menu consisting of the likes of bone marrow garlic mash, beef dripping chips and truffled macaroni cheese, Flat Iron aims to be an ‘affordable’ place where people can grab a good meal, a drink and some sides for less than £25 each.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News last week, Flat Iron’s Head of Beef Fred Smith said: “There’s loads of great places out there that serve steak but they tend to be the kinds of places where you leave with a lighter wallet than the one you went in with. Our mission was to have a fantastic eating experience but not necessarily at the price point you’d expect.”

The two-floor venue, housed in the former Royal London Friendly Society headquarters building which dates back to 1908, has space for 150 covers and features a basement dining area as well as an open-plan space with a centrepiece bar selling a range of curated cocktails, alongside wines, beers and ‘house fizzes’.

Speaking about the 500 free Wagyu steak offer, Fred added: “I spend an unusual amount of time trying to source incredible beef and our Wagyu is properly special.

“To celebrate our new restaurant opening its doors, we will be giving away shedloads of this uber-tender beef to the good people of Manchester. Join us on 2nd July and let us know what you think.”

The offer will run from 5pm on Tuesday (July 2) on a first-come first-served basis, with a big turnout expected. Flat Iron opens on July 3.
