Manchester United are considering two formations for FA Cup final amid Rasmus Hojlund form

Rasmus Hojlund's goalscoring form could prompt Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag to abandon his tactical plans for the FA Cup final against City next week.

Ten Hag benched Hojlund for both of this week's games against Newcastle United and Brighton as Bruno Fernandes started up front in a strikerless formation.

United struggled in the system against Brighton and Hojlund emerged with the game goalless at the pause. Ten Hag mistakenly suggested Hojlund came on after United went 1-0 up when his presence seemed to unnerve Brighton defender Igor Julio, who misjudged Casemiro's long pass and allowed Diogo Dalot to score.

Hojlund then claimed his 16th goal of the campaign to become United's outright top scorer ten months on from his £72million arrival from Atalanta.

Fernandes played as the 'false nine' in United's 3-1 defeat away to City in March and Ten Hag admitted the formation has been trialled ahead of the FA Cup final.

"I think he (Hojlund) came in after we scored the goal with the movement from Diogo in behind and he showed [he was] very fresh, as on Wednesday as well," Ten Hag said. "Scored two great goals and he made a very good impression.

"I think it's a luxury problem and I think both formations can be a success because, as you know, we can play like the set-up in the Etihad where we were a threat, with movement in behind.

"Of course, with Rasmus Hojlund in this form it's an absolute consideration and thought that we have to consider and to take, so let's have a thought. I also want to say you need not only 11 players in a tough final but you want a bench as well.

"It (his goals haul) could always be better but don't forget he had three injuries this season. He came with an injury, missed the start, he got injured before winter and got injured after winter. Every time, it broke his rhythm. Sixteen goals for his first season is okay and it's not over. We have the FA Cup final to play.

"I would say the manager, the coaching team, has luxury problems, which is good."
