Manchester United looking at new coaching appointment after latest departure

Manchester United are exploring options to appoint another senior professional to the role of player and coach in their under-21s set-up after hailing the innovation as a success.

Former Premier League midfielder Tom Huddlestone has spent the past two seasons fulfilling the role and he scored in the Premier League 2 win against Manchester City in February.

Huddlestone's role was to provide advice to young players during games, as well as coaching during the week, and he replaced his former Hull City teammate Paul McShane in the job. McShane spent a year playing and coaching the team, before accepting a role as lead academy coach for the under-15s. He has since also joined the backroom staff in the Republic of Ireland Under-21s set-up.

Huddlestone made eight appearances in Premier League 2 this season, as well as coming off the bench for the final eight minutes of the 4-3 defeat to Salford City in the EFL Trophy. He announced his departure from United last month but the club have now confirmed his exit when releasing their retained list.

"Over the past two seasons, I have experienced remarkable growth and invaluable learning, both on and off the pitch," said Huddlestone.

"Every day, I have had the privilege of learning from amazing people, gaining insights into all aspects of player development and well-being. Entering an office environment for the first time was daunting, but from day one, I was made to feel welcome and at ease. I am and will remain forever grateful for the smooth transition.

"For any senior professionals considering a coaching career, I highly recommend taking on a "playing coach" role for a season or two at the end of your playing career."

United believe the role played by McShane and Huddlestone across the previous three seasons has been beneficial to their academy players and are open to extending it again this season.

Any appointment depends on a candidate being available, with the club looking for an experienced professional who is ready to start their coaching career as well. While United are exploring options for 2024/25, there is an acceptance that they can't guarantee finding an ideal candidate every season.
