Jose Mourinho insisted Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Chelsea was an ‘awful’ result for his under pressure side.

The 55-year-old came within seconds of a vital win at Stamford Bridge - only to be denied by Ross Barkley’s equaliser deep into stoppage time.

The under-fire United manager hailed his team’s performance after Anthony Martial’s second half double put them on the verge of three points, following Antonio Rudiger’s first half header.

But he admitted the nature of Chelsea’s comeback was a particularly bitter blow.

“(We were) the best team on the pitch,” said Mourinho. “If you say before the match one point at Stamford Bridge, it's always a good result because it's so difficult for teams to win here.

“But after the game, the way the game was, it's an awful result for us and a phenomenal result for them.

“I'm really, really, really pleased with the individuals in the team and the work we did in the last couple of days. I'm really pleased with everything apart from the result, which is an awful result for us.”

Mourinho had described Eden Hazard as a one-man title-winning team before the match, but believed his side silenced Chelsea’s talisman.

“We controlled their triggers,” he added. “Hazard was controlled and I've never seen Jorginho play so little like he did today, so we were completely in control.

“But maybe after the 2-1, we had again great positions to score the third goal. We were the best team, we were calm, we had complete control.

“The team played very well. As a team, we played very, very well. Individually, in the second half, they raised the bar, especially the attacking players who brought the game into a different dimension.

“But the defensive players also had a solid performance and again, I repeat, against a very good team full of very good players.”

"Mourinho bemoaned the nature of the goals United conceded, with Rudiger’s effort the fifth time his side have been breached from a set piece this season.

Paul Pogba was guilty of losing his man, but United’s manager refused to blame the midfielder.

“Players make mistakes and I prefer to focus on the global performance,” he said. “My midfield was very good, Paul was good, (Nemanja) Matic was good, (Juan) Mata was good, Ander Herrera was also in the game. these three attacking players work a lot.”
