The Mandalorian is back today on Disney Plus for its third season and fans are already reacting to the events of the premiere.
The episode most prominently addressed the departure of Cara Dune, played by Gina Carano. Carano was fired from the show after making a number of controversial remarks on social media regarding Black Lives Matter and compared the treatment of American conservatives to Jewish people during the Holocaust.
The former MMA fighter has also since made divisive comments about the war in Ukraine being a conspiracy theory and widespread voter fraud taking place during the 2020 US election.
After the first episode confirmed that Dune is gone and has been recruited by "special forces", fans reacted online to the revelation.
One said: "Going to really miss @ginacarano as former Rebel shock trooper Cara Dune on Mando. The Aldaraan survivor's story arc could have been among the best in the SW universe - especially when pained with Gina's incredible charm, skill and physique."
Another wanted the character to return to the show: "They should bring @ginacaranoback to the #Mandalorian."
Others were happy to see the character abruptly written off given Carano's comments online with one writing: "The way they wrote off Gina Carano lmaoooooo well done!"
Another fan suggested a way of keeping the character in the show: "I don’t see why they just didn’t recast Cara Dune. It’s not like Gina Carano is that good of an actress anyway."
Mandalorian executive producer and director Rick Famuyiwa also recently addressed how they would handle Carano's departure: “It had to be addressed in the creative, and [Jon Favreau] took the time to think about that. It was something that was discussed as we knew it was going to have impact on the show, but at the same time, what has been at the heart of the show are the two characters — Din Djarin and Grogu — so ultimately it felt like a servicing of that, and around the Mandalorians.”
