The Mandalorian's Pedro Pascal joins Gladiator 2

The Mandalorian and The Last of Us star Pedro Pascal will reportedly join the cast for Gladiator 2, as per Deadline.

The actor, who plays the lead characters in each respective show, is the latest big name for the long-awaited sequel to the 2000 Academy Award winner.

Pascal will join Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, Barry Keoghan, Joseph Quinn and a returning Connie Nielsen for the film, which is again being directed by Ridley Scott.

The story will follow Lucius (Mescal), the son of Lucilla (Nielsen) and nephew of Commodus, who was played by Joaquin Phoenix in the first film.

The original film, which starred Russell Crowe in the lead role of Maximus Decimus Meridius, grossed over $500 million worldwide and won five Academy Awards including Best Picture, but a sequel hasn’t materialised until recently.

Gladiator 2 isn’t the only project that Pascal has recently joined, with the actor set to star alongside Matt Damon in Drive-Away Dolls, the new film from one half of the Coen Brothers.

The comedy, which will be the sole directorial debut from Ethan Coen, will follow “Jamie, an uninhibited free spirit bemoaning yet another breakup with a girlfriend, and her demure friend Marian who desperately needs to loosen up.

“In search of a fresh start, the two embark on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee, but things quickly go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals along the way,” concludes the synopsis.

Pascal, who will also lead short film Strange Way of Life, recently spoke about the filming process for The Mandalorian, saying the suit took a physical toll on him.

“It’s like putting on a head-to-toe glove with weights on it,” he said. “They’ve continued to finesse and make it more comfortable, but it’s like going blind. Your breath completely fogs up the narrow slit that you can see through. There’s no peripheral vision.”

Gladiator 2 is scheduled to be released on November 22, 2024. The Mandalorian season 3 is streaming on Disney+, with new episodes on Wednesdays.
