Police are appealing for information about a man and a woman after a man in his 60s was the subject of a "violent and unprovoked attack" near a town centre restaurant.

At around 7.30pm on Friday, May 31, a man in his 60s was assaulted near Gusto on the corner of Lord Street and Portland Street in Southport town centre. He was taken to hospital with a broken jaw and has required surgery since.

Extensive enquiries are underway and police are now sharing images of a man and woman detectives think may have information which may assist investigations.

Detective Inspector Paul McVeigh said: "This was a violent and unprovoked attack which resulted in a serious injury to the victim, as well as being a traumatic experience.

"We are determined to identify those responsible so I would urge anyone who recognises the man and woman pictured to come forward as soon as possible. They may have vital information to assist us.

"Likewise, if you were in the area and saw the incident itself or any kind of commotion on Lord Street, let us know or send on any footage or images you may have."
