The first ever series of Big Brother launched in the UK on 18th July 2000, after the initial series was created by John de Mol and premiered in the Netherlands in 1999.

The UK series was shown on Channel 4 and E4, and was hosted by Davina McCall. Craig Phillips was crowned the season one winner. The narrator of the series is Marcus Bentley, who has stayed on the show throughout every season.

Davina went onto host all 11 series of Big Brother while it appeared on Channel 4. The 11 winners of the original Big Brother were in order: Craig Phillips, Brian Dowling, Kate Lawler, Cameron Stout, Paul Brennan, Nadia Almada, Anthony Hutton, Pete Bennett, Brian Belo, Rachel Rice, Sophie Reade and Josie Gibson.

At the end of series 11, a new spin-off series Ultimate Big Brother was announced and saw memorable former housemates compete to win the title of "Ultimate Housemate". Series two winner Brian Dowling eventually won the series.

After 10 years at Channel 4, Big Brother was acquired by Channel 5 in a £200million two-year deal with the production company Endemol, who produced the series.

It was confirmed series two winner Brian Dowling would host the series, after Davina McCall declined to return to the series. In 2013 it was confirmed Emma Willis, who had previously presented the spin-off Big Brother's Bit on The Side, would be taking over hosting duties. Emma presented the series until the show ended in 2018. Marcus Bentley returned as narrator for all eight series.

The first winner of the series at Channel 5 was Aaron Allard-Morgan. The rest of the Channel 5 winners are as follows: Luke Anderson, Sam Evans, Helen Wood, Chloe Wilburn, Jason Burrill, Isabelle Warburton and Cameron Cole, who was the series youngest ever winner at 19 years old.

On 14th September 2018 it was officially confirmed the 19th series of the show would be the last on Channel 5, with a spokesperson for the channel telling the BBC: "The forthcoming series of Big Brother will be the last - of either celebrity or civilian versions - on Channel 5.

"We'd like to thank Endemol and all of the production team who have worked tirelessly to make the show a success."

Shortly after Channel 5's statement Endemol released their own statement saying they were "disappointed" to have not reached an agreement with Channel 5 about the series future.
