Marcelo Bielsa is 'only man' to stop Argentina Copa America bid as Aguero hails Leeds United legend

Leeds United legend Marcelo Bielsa is the only man standing between Argentina and Copa America glory - according to Premier League goal legend Sergio Aguero.

The former Whites boss is aiming to guide Uruguay to more success in this summer's tournament, with a quarter-final tie against Brazil next up on Sunday evening. World champions Argentina are the hot favourites to lift the trophy in the July 15 final, with Lionel Scaloni's side taking on Ecuador in their quarter-final tonight.

Uruguay are the only side to have beaten Argentina since they became World champions in Qatar in 2022 and Aguero, who scored 260 goals in 390 appearances for Manchester City, is well aware of the dangers Bielsa and Co bring.

“My favourite three teams outside of Argentina, because obviously they are the main candidates, I think Uruguay has a lot to give now with Marcelo Bielsa, even though Brazil isn’t in their best version they are also to be feared, and finally Colombia because they haven’t lost a game in a long time, but the important thing will be to prove themselves in the big stages," Aguero told told Stake.com.

“I don’t know if they are candidates to be champions, but they should go far in the tournament. I think Argentina are their own biggest threat, because we shouldn’t be over confident. But Uruguay is the only team that could beat us, because Marcelo Bielsa knows Lionel Scaloni very well. Let’s not forget that Uruguay is the only team that has beat us since becoming world champions.”

Bielsa is still a club legend at Leeds United, guiding them to the Premier League in 2020 before taking the top flight by storm with his unique brand of high intensity football. He left the club in 2022 after four years in charge amid a relegation battle, before taking the job as Uruguay coach in 2023.
