Mark Wahlberg is allergic to dogs despite wanting to adopt his “King Arthur” costar
Wahlberg has four dogs and costars with one in his new film.
Mark Wahlberg's family has a quartet of dogs, and he costars with one in his upcoming film, Arthur the King. Yet, it's not so easy for the Boogie Nights actor to be around them despite a clear love of dogs.
"I'm allergic to dogs, and I have four of them," Wahlberg told PEOPLE as he sneezed through a new interview. He even takes medication daily to deal with it.
Despite his allergies, he stars alongside Ukai, an Australian shepherd-Border collie-Bouvier mix, in the film that arrives in theaters on Friday. The movie is based on the true story of adventure racer Mikael Lindnord, who met a stray dog in Ecuador that became his racing companion.
"You got to accept the fact that the dog's going to show you up a little bit," Wahlberg says of working with animals on screen. "He was very good at what he does."
Wahlberg hasn't been shy about praising his costar, even recently revealing that he tried to adopt the dog while on set, a proposal that Ukai's trainer rebuffed.
"Oh my god, I tried to bribe the trainer to sell me the dog," he told PEOPLE in February. "I offered her whatever she would want. But, of course, that bond is not something that you can separate. I just fell in love with him."
His penchant for finding himself around dogs despite an allergy may have a bit to do with having four kids at home, all of whom fell in love with Ukai, he told PEOPLE.
However, he's not in charge of the pups at home. That responsibility falls elsewhere. "The one who is in most control and actually can handle them all the time and they listen to is my daughter Grace," he says. "She's good with animals. She's the authority figure in the house."
