Martin Lewis issues £50 warning to EDF Energy smart meter customers

Martin Lewis has issued a £50 warning to EDF customers - ahead of a handy windfall as the Cost of Living crisis continues. The BBC Sounds podcast host spoke out via his Twitter, now X, platform on Wednesday June 19 as he made the tariff announcement.

He said: "There's a new energy tariff that offers £50 a year off standing charges, it works out as competitive for lowers users." In reply, a fan said: "Issue being it’s EDF and they will just jack up your prices anyway." Another said: "Yeah but it's with EDF! I would rather pay more and get great customer service from Octopus."

"I'm on £75 per month dual fuel with EDF - most of it being standing charge. Seems like a no brainer," another wrote. "Being a low user and all electric my standing charges are now 1/3 (without VAT) of my monthly electric bill . It's a disgusting ripoff and needs to be abolished," another fumed.

Another said: "Interesting that the standing charge can be manipulated as a sales pitch yet the higher rate (let's not forget this) as a transitional relief for suppliers during the bankruptcies, should've been reset to old lower levels. Why hasn't it been? Relief no longer needed it appears."

"Shame they insist on a smart meter. I dont want a smart meter. I don't want energy companies imposing into my property using there own network, primarily to sell my data," another commented. In the weekly Money Saving Expert newsletter, it warns: "The new EDF Ensure tracker tariff* promises to remain £50 cheaper on dual fuel standing charges for a year.

"The unit rates will be the same as the Price Cap (though for launch it's already at the cheaper July unit rates). This is a decent option for lower users (say under £100/mth). It's open to most payment methods (incl prepay), though you'll need to get a smart meter if you don't already have one. Full pros, cons & alternatives in our EDF Ensure tracker review.

"Mid-to-high users: You'll likely pay substantially less by fixing, as while the Price Cap will fall in July, it's predicted to rise in October. Do a Cheap Energy Club comparison to find your cheapest."
