Martin Lewis issues furious statement and rages 'not again'

Martin Lewis has reacted with fury after being used in a Conservative Party promotional video a day out from the General Election. The BBC Sounds and ITV star spoke out on Twitter, now X, over the use of his face and words in a Rishi Sunak promo video.

The Prime Minister shared the video on Twitter, now X, on Wednesday (July 3). Mr Lewis said: "Not again! I have NOT given my permission to be used in political adverts. This is NOT an endorsement by me in any way. I maintain strict party neutrality and am unhappy at the weaponizing of my reputation in this way.

"While this isn't as bad as the first terrible representation – which said it this about tax - there's still a misdirection. As I’ve already stated, in that private conversation I was referring to Labour hoping to make a positive change I’ve been campaigning for, but it didn’t want to lock it in the manifesto as it can’t promise to deliver.

" NO party’s manifesto tells the full story. ALL parties have things they hope to do but that aren’t in manifestos – as they can’t guarantee to deliver. The idea that Labour is an outlier for that is preposterous." In reply to Mr Sunak's video, a community note has been added.

The explainer says: "Martin Lewis did not give consent for his content to be used in this political campaign. Martin explains that he remains politically neutral and he does not endorse the Conservative Party in any way."

A Twitter user asked: "Were you not even contacted about this?" Mr Lewis said: "Of course not. I've only just seen it." He went on: "I think the question is a bit confused. I was talking about politics and explaining how it works.

"That is very different to supporting and campaigning for a party. If not there could be no journalism."
