Martin Lewis issues standing charge warning ahead of rules changing

Martin Lewis has issued a standing charge update for British Gas, OVO, EDF and EOn customers over the "unfair" amount being put on energy bills. The BBC Sounds podcast host spoke out on Twitter/X after an open letter from Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho today.

Money Saving Expert star Mr Lewis, who is an ITV regular, has long called for standing charge reform. Standing charges are the daily cost you pay for the facility of having gas and electricity, even if you don't use any. The charges have increased significantly over the past two years, and can vary hugely depending on where you live.

Ms Coutinho said: "I recently met with @MartinSLewis to discuss how we’re keeping bills down and making sure consumers are getting the fairest deal. Here’s how. Energy bills have fallen to their lowest in 2 years, but I want them to fall even further.

"That’s why we encouraged Ofgem to consult on Standing Charges and expect the results as quickly as possible. We will consider all reforms that will provide greater choice & lower bills. Competition and innovation in the market are key to making sure consumers get the best possible deal. To support this, we’re consulting on default tariffs and the future of the price cap. On top of this, our work on off-peak tariffs could save families £900 on their bills.

"Smart meters can help families benefit from better deals, and 90% of them work correctly. But for the 10% that don’t, I’m not complacent. We have got suppliers to offer better protections & I'm considering further steps to speed up compensation and hold suppliers to account.

"When it comes to supporting the most vulnerable, our Warm Home Discount has provided over £4bn since 2011 to help low-income households stay warm. With extra support like cost-of-living payments, disability payments & wage increases, we're putting more money in people’s pockets."
