Martin Lewis issues urgent OVO energy warning as customers share horror stories
Martin Lewis has sounded the alarm over OVO Energy, expressing his shock on social media after hearing from customers who have struggled to get credit refunds. The money-saving expert and television personality responded to concerns raised by consumers, stating: "I'm staggered."
One disgruntled customer took to X, formerly Twitter, to voice their frustration, saying: "My energy supplier is OVO. I am in credit by £2,300 but I am being told by them that this money helps the company support people in arrears. Hold on this is MY money not theirs and I want it back!"
In response, Martin advised: "I'm staggered by this. Something is wrong, unless you've as huge energy bill (eg £1,500+/mth) thats far too much credit, I'm hoping it is just a misunderstanding. I'd suggest you do a meter reading and check the bill has been updated."

He further suggested: "Check the direct debit is roughly right (calcs on my site). Call up and politely ask them to justify why this amount of credit. If it can't ask for the excess credit back."
Meanwhile, another individual commented on their own experience with OVO: "OVO are horrendous. We would pay one bill and be owing them the same 2 weeks later," reports Birmingham Live.
"Bills doubled. Moved to @OctopusEnergy last year and no complaints (so far! ). Billing is straightforward and they adjust your DD when required."
Additionally, a former OVO customer shared: "Left OVO when I was a grand in credit and they wanted to increase my DD again."
One disgruntled customer vented: "Have similar.. 1397 in credit. Has taken 6 months to get them to reduce the DD despite numerous requests. Asked for the money back and was told "but your bills show you'll use it in the summer" (pool heater).. indeed, that maybe so, but charge me for what I use when I have".
Another expressed their frustration: "Not the first story I've heard like this. 'Customers' have been strung along for months when trying to get their own money from a supplier. Ofgem are worse than useless as a company obfuscates, promises, drags its feet etc etc. Good luck sorting it out."
In response to Mr Lewis, another agreed: "Stop your DD to them until credit is reduced and start a complaint to regulator. It's very easy to do and @OVOEnergy will offer you a repayment. They are a dreadful company and will never respond until you refer to Ofgem....."
