Martin Lewis' MSE says EDF Energy customers will notice £50 more in bank account

Martin Lewis' Money Saving Expert has said customers can get £50 off energy standing charges with EDF's new discounted Price Cap tariff. BBC Sounds podcast star Mr Lewis has long campaigned for standing charges to be scrapped in the UK.

The ITV star's MSE team have now moved to praise EDF Energy which has launched a new tariff. The new EDF Ensure tracker tariff is effectively a discounted version of the Price Cap that will be £50 cheaper over the year – and it does this by lowering standing charges, not unit rates.

MSE revealed: "EDF's new tariff is a decent deal for lower energy users – say, those currently paying up to £100 a month – above that there are other options that could work out cheaper." EDF says it will apply the same fixed discount on the Price Cap standing charges to all payment methods across all regions (and standing charges vary widely by region), so you get a flat £25 discount on electricity and/or a flat £25 on gas over 12 months.

The tariff isfor dual-fuel or gas or electricity-only. IIf you leave before the end of the year, you'll have to pay £25 per fuel early exit fee (so the same as the discount. The tariff will launch discounted against the 1 July price cap level, offering an annual average cost of £1,518 until the next Ofgem price cap change on 1st October.

Rich Hughes Director of Retail at EDF, said: “While the price cap will come down from July, it is expected to increase once again this Winter. Our new tariff will guarantee that customers who have already cut back or made changes to improve energy efficiency will pay proportionately less.

“Standing charges have increased significantly over the previous couple of years and this new tariff is another way we are helping customers save cash and carbon.”
