Martin Lewis' MSE warns mobile phone users to 'switch provider ASAP'

Martin Lewis' Money Saving Expert has warned mobile phone users to "switch" provider "ASAP". MSE, which is run by the BBC and ITV regular, warned you are at risk losing your mobile number after Plusnet Mobile confirmed a shutdown.

MSE warns you’ll only have 40 days from your June billing date to switch to a new provider and keep your phone number. The MSE team said: “After that, you'll no longer be able to transfer your existing mobile number to a new firm – it'll be gone for good.”

A spokesperson for Plusnet said: "We have been contacting customers since May 2023 to let them know our Plusnet mobile service is closing. We have now confirmed that this will close for customers throughout June 2024.

"Customers looking for an alternative mobile service can take advantage of exclusive EE SIM only deals with all the great value of Plusnet and the speed and reliability of EE. There is still time for Plusnet customers to move to EE and keep their mobile number."

Existing Plusnet Mobile users will lose access to their service from their June billing date. This will vary by customer, though you should have been given at least 30 days' notice. After the switch-off, you'll no longer be able to use your Sim card to make calls (other than emergency 999 calls), send texts or access the internet.

Plusnet wouldn't tell us how many customers are affected, but it says more than nine in 10 (92%) have already moved providers. Simply text PAC for free to 65075 and you'll be sent your 'porting authorisation code' (PAC) immediately via text.

MSE explains: "The switch should happen within one working day. You WON'T be charged any early exit fees to switch, even if you're mid-contract. When you switch, your service will be cancelled and you'll be told by Plusnet if there are any outstanding charges and the date you'll need to pay these by."
