Martin Lewis warns Santander customers over 'first rule' and says 'remember'

Martin Lewis has said "remember" as he issued a "first rule" to Santander customers. The BBC Sounds star defended himself over urging customers to take advantage of a free £175 cash offer for customers who are switching banks to Santander.

ITV star Mr Lewis said: "Interesting that some responding but their 'name another product' is crap, so... Remember the 1st rule of MoneySaving Club is forget loyalty - judge each product on its own merits If you try and stick with one bank for everything, you'll definitely not have the best deals.

" The 2nd rule of MoneySaving Club is don't talk about MoneySaving Club, which to be fair I've broken on more than one occasion." In reply, a fan said: "Can you see anymore banks in the near future launching a switching offer?"

"yes hope so though its been a bit sparse recently," Mr Lewis replied. A Twitter user wrote back: "If I switch back (which I am tempted to do) would my 'relationship' with my current bank hinder my chances of mortgages etc???"

Richard wrote: "The biggest thing that keeps me from switching is the fear that I'll get locked out of good rates with my current lender when it comes to remortgage time. Is that an irrational fear to have? Are more favourable rates for current accounts holders still a thing?"

"Ok, but introductory offers, which expire in a year or less, and exploit customer's inertia, are not in the wider interests of customers. Fair competition is good but this isn't it," another said. "This is very true, I really like my bank as a bank but I don't use any of their other services because they aren't the best. Rather go best in class for each product," another commented.

"Any bank but santander that spiderweb," another said.
