What's happening in Marvel Phase 5?Marvel Studios

Phase 5 didn't get off to the best start with the poorly received Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 looks to have got The Multiverse Saga of the MCU back on track.

At Comic-Con 2022, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige revealed the timeline for Phase 5 which includes the usual blend of further adventures for established MCU stars and brand-new characters to bring into the universe.

There's a lot going on, so we're here to help you keep on top of all the goings-on of Marvel Phase 5 with all the information you need to know, including release dates and confirmed cast information as of May 2023.

(As ever, release dates are subject to change.)

Marvel Phase 5 release dates: What is the current Phase 5 timeline?

Phase 5 is underway following the release of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania (February 17, 2023) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 (May 3, 2023 in the UK), but this is just the start.

Following some shifts to the announcements at Comic-Con, here's how the timeline as it stands as of May 2023:

June 21, 2023 – Secret Invasion
Summer 2023 – Loki season two
November 10, 2023 – The Marvels
Winter 2023 – Agatha: Coven of Chaos (previously titled Agatha: House of Harkness)
Spring 2024 – Daredevil: Born Again
May 3, 2024
Captain America: New World Order
July 26, 2024
Thunderbolts
September 6, 2024
Blade
TBC – Echo
TBC – Ironheart
TBC
– What If...? season two

It was thought that Echo, Ironheart and What If...? season two would arrive in 2023, but they have yet to receive confirmed release dates and there have been reports that Marvel is slowing down its releases to space them out now.

Those three shows might still arrive this year, but we're not sure yet which is why we've given them a TBC release in the timeline for now.

Marvel fans had been hoping that Deadpool 3 would be slotted into Phase 5, but it has now found its place in Phase 6.

Phase 5 kicked off with a movie double-bill in February and May 2023 with Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, respectively.

We were going to get The Marvels in July, but we'll now have to wait until November 2023. It will bring together Brie Larson's Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel with Iman Vellani's Kamala Khan/Ms Marvel and Teyonah Parris's Monica Rambeau.

Samuel L Jackson is also back as Nick Fury who will also pop up in Secret Invasion (more on that in a bit), while the villain role will be taken by Zawe Ashton and Park Seo-joon is also making his MCU debut.

We then get a double-bill of potentially closely connected movies with Captain America: New World Order followed by Thunderbolts.

The former will see Anthony Mackie back as Sam Wilson/the new Captain America, while Thunderbolts will bring back a host of MCU stars including Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes and David Harbour's Red Guardian.

Blade was set to be released in November 2023, but after its director Bassam Tariq exited, the movie was shifted back to September 2024. It will star Mahershala Ali as the titular vampire hunter, alongside Aaron Pierre and Delroy Lindo in yet-to-be-announced roles.

For now, we assume it remains part of Phase 5 and will mark the end of the Phase, but there's a chance it could find itself as the opening movie of Phase 6 instead.

The TV side of Phase 5 will kick off with the eagerly-anticipated Secret Invasion which brings back Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn as Talos.

Kingsley Ben-Adir, Emilia Clarke and Olivia Colman, among others, are making their MCU debuts in the series about a faction of Skrulls who have been infiltrating Earth for years.

In summer 2023, we're still expecting season two of Loki which will bring back all of your favourites from the first season, including Tom Hiddleston as Loki (obviously), Sophie Di Martino as Sylvie and Owen Wilson as Mobius M Mobius.

A release date for the second season has yet to be confirmed, so it could shift later in the year.

We also don't know when Hawkeye spin-off Echo will arrive. The series brings back Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez/Echo and is also said to star Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio as Daredevil and Kingpin, respectively.

After debuting in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Dominique Thorne will return as Riri Williams in Ironheart. Other cast members confirmed include Anthony Ramos and Alden Ehrenreich, but we don't yet know who they're playing.

Again, we don't have a confirmed release date for the show.

The final two TV shows of Phase 5 are WandaVision spin-off Agatha: Coven of Chaos, which will bring back Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness, and the long-awaited Daredevil reboot which is fittingly titled Daredevil: Born Again.

We don't know much about the plot of either of them yet, but we do know that the new Daredevil series will be 18 episodes long and it will feature Charlie Cox as Daredevil and Vincent D'Onofrio as Kingpin.

You can catch up on almost of the MCU to date on Disney+.
