Mary Poppins Returns sequel in "early stages" at Disney
Mary Poppins Returns has proved to be a big hit at the box office, raking in over $260 million worldwide.
So it would be no surprise if we saw another big-screen outing from everyone's favourite Nanny, and this time we hopefully won't have to wait 54 years.
Speaking to The Sun, director Rob Marshall said the team behind Mary Poppins Returns were in the "early stages" of working on a follow-up.
“It is early stages but I will say right now that there were eight books, so there’s a lot of great material still to mine. That’s what we worked from, those incredible eight books of P.L. Travers. So, you know...” Marshall said.
The director went on to suggest that the franchise could have long-lasting longevity, in the style of Star Wars or James Bond. "If there’s a great character and story to tell, why not?” Marshall added.
Producer John DeLuca also suggested another film was in the pipeline and that star Emily Blunt would be more than happy to reprise the role.
“Emily does light up when she speaks to me about it," DeLuca said. "And if the people want it, I think it will happen.”
Digital Spy has reached out to Disney for comment.
Meanwhile, despite the film's huge success, Emily Blunt failed to receive a Best Actress nomination at this year's BAFTAs.
And this past Sunday, she lost out on the Golden Globe for Best Actress Musical or Comedy to Olivia Colman, who scooped the award for her role as Queen Anne in The Favourite.
Mary Poppins Returns is out now.
