The Masked Singer US season 3 spoilers follow.

The Masked Singer aired its season 3 finale in the US last night (May 20), and unmasked the final three celebrities in the competition.

While it was Night Angel (aka Kandi Burruss) who finished the series as winner, just behind her in second place was none other than Turtle, who was revealed to be singer and Summerland actor Jesse McCartney.

But if you couldn't figure out who was behind the mask from the show's clues, then don't worry as Jesse himself has now admitted that some of the clues producers opted for surprised even him.

"I couldn't figure out a couple of them," Jesse told Entertainment Weekly following the season finale last night.

"And then I had to literally go on Reddit and Twitter and see what other people were figuring out about the clues about me, and I would go, 'Oh, yeah, that must be it'."

During the chat, Jesse also revealed that the producers are very thorough when it comes to putting the clues together, especially when the show gears up towards its final episodes.

"I would say I was a part of 80% of the clue packaging, but at a certain point, when the show starts heating up, it moves so quickly that sometimes they have to just work on the clues without you," he explained.

"But it's always information that I had given them or quotes that I'd given them. But I generally didn't get to see any of the clues until they do the live broadcast."

Of course, the clues weren't quite enough to throw off the judges themselves, as the panel did end up guessing who Turtle was, and Jesse admitted he was "freaking out" when they said his name.

"I do remember it happening on stage and I think you know, your initial reaction is to freeze," he said.

"When they announced Jesse McCartney it took me by surprise, and my initial reaction was, 'Oh shit, they got it'. But then I realised that's going to be a giveaway. I've just got to do my normal reaction.

"So I think I went into like a surfboard thing or like a surf's up thing. I just kind of just tried to play it as cool as I could, but definitely inside that mask I was freaking out."

The Masked Singer US airs on Fox. Its UK equivalent airs on ITV.
