A massive Newry packaging factory has been approved to be developed by Spanish packaging giants 'Saica'.

The investment by the Zaragoza-based company’s UK subsidiary Saica Pack Ltd will see the group relocate from its current operation at Warrenpoint Harbour, to construct its corrugated fibreboard factory at Invest NI’s Carnbane Industrial Estate.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council's (NMDDC) planning committee signed off on the recommendation for approval after no requests were made for speaking rights at Tuesday's meeting. A similar scale corrugated board factory by Saica is being developed in Barcelona at an investment of more than €100million.

Saica Group employs approximately 10,000 people across its European operations, which manufactures recycled paper for corrugated board. The group currently operate from five sites on the island of Ireland, including Lurgan and Enniskillen.
