He only made his debut as a Match of the Day pundit a few days ago, but Wayne Rooney is clearly feeling very comfortable in the role as he wasted no time in firing a 'scathing' dig at one of his co-stars on the show on Monday night.

Having made his debut for Euros debut for England 20 years ago for Euro 2004, ex Everton and Manchester United striker Wayne has been recruited by the BBC to join the like of fellow ex pros and England internationals like Alan Shearer, Frank Lampard and Joe Hart to offer insights over in Germany, as the Three Lions bid to make the last 16.

Gareth Southgate's side take on Slovenia on Tuesday night but, 24 hours earlier there was business to be taken care of between Croatia and Italy as both of them aimed to join Group B winners Spain in the knockouts. Forwards Wayne and Alan joined host Gary Lineker in the studio, as they were joined by ex Manchester City star Micah Richards.

And it was the defender who Wayne aimed a jab at in the run up to Croatia v Italy kicking off. After a montage of Italy's key moments in Euro 2024 so far played out on screen, cameras fell back on the BBC rooftop set. Explaining why Micah was appearing very animated, Gary remarked: "Micah's getting very excited. There's a group of young lads down there singing Micah Richards songs. I mean what's going on?"

Looking delighted, Micah responded: "What's happened?! Three number 9s and the best England has ever had and they're shouting for Big Meeks?" Sitting right next to him, Wayne fired back: "I think it's the sympathy!" Taking the dig on the chin, Micah then replied: "'Cos it's my birthday!"
