Mats Hummels trolls Premier League over Euro exits as he leans into German 'farmer's league' jibes

German football continues to have the last laugh this week as Mats Hummels kept the trolling rolling after yet another English side was dumped out of Europe by "farmer's league" opposition.

The Dortmund star has a Champions League semi-final against Paris-SG to look forward to after an epic comeback against Atletico Madrid. That result was followed by Bayern Munich dumping Arsenal out with a 1-0 win at the Allianz Arena to set up a massive semi-final showdown with Real Madrid, who edged out Man City on penalties.

And Bundesliga shock troops Bayer Leverkusen completed a clean sweep for the German sides. Fresh from celebrating a first ever Bundesliga title, Xabi Alonso's side shook off their hangovers to draw 1-1 with West Ham, sending them through to the Europa League last four with a 3-1 aggregate victory. Former Celtic star Jeremie Frimpong's late deflected strike kept Leverkusen's incredible unbeaten run going. They are yet to taste defeat in any competition under the Spaniard, and still have a Treble in their sights, with a German Cup Final date with 1.FC Koln still to come.

The standard of the Bundesliga has been called into question by cocky English pundits in recent weeks. Referred to as a "farmer's league" given Bayern's dominance over the last decade, English exceptionalism has lead to German sides seeing their chances of European success dismissed when faced with Premier League opposition.

But they've been made to eat their words this week, with two Bundesliga sides in the semi-finals of Europe's premier competition for the first time since 2013. And Aston Villa remain the only English hope of a European trophy after they beat Lille to reach thr semis of the Europa Conference League.

Hummels couldn't resist the chance to poke more fun at his country's detractors. He posted: "Good harvesting this week my fellow farmers," accompanied by a handshake emoji and a German flag emoji. Wundervoller scherz.
