Matt O'Riley ribbed over Celtic penalty miss but star man makes a guarantee to punters

Matt O’Riley was ribbed by a well-heeled Celtic punter as he was presented with his man of the mach champagne following a standout display in the champions’ 2-1 win over Rangers at Parkhead that put them on the bring of three-in-a-row.

The midfielder netted a brilliant opener against the Light Blues and his all-round display saw him named the top performer on the pitch but he missed the chance to make it 3-1 when his spot kick, which he won after he was fouled by Mohamed Diomande, was saved by Jack Butland.

Still in his full kit shortly after full time, the Denmark international and former MK Dons man made his way to the club’s Number 7 restaurant as is customary for the man of the match. A video shared on social media shows a female fan presenting O’Riley with his bottle of bubbly and she says: “Well done, congratulations. Shame about the penalty but we got it done!”

The suite roared with laughter and, repeating what he had side in his post match interview for Sky Sports, he said: “It was a s*** penalty though.” The suite host then said: “So you’ll not do that next week?”

With Celtic needing a point from Wednesday’s trip to Kilmarnock or their final game of the season at home to St Mirren, assuming Rangers beat Dundee on Tuesday, O’Riley smiled: “I’ll probably not do that but we still won so it’s okay. It’s not done yet but hopefully on Wednesday we can get that.”
