Matty Healy and model Gabbriette Bechtel are engaged!

Following his split from Taylor Swift in June 2023, The 1975 frontman was spotted engaging in some PDA with Bechtel in New York City the following September. The couple have since made several public appearances together, including during Fashion Week and at the band's concerts. In June 2024, the two confirmed they were engaged.

Often known by just her nickname, Gabbriette was born Gabriella Bechtel in Orange County, California, in 1997 to a Mexican mother and German father. Despite her dreams of being a ballet dancer, Gabbriette became a model and has worked with brands like Diesel, Bottega Veneta and Skims.

In addition to her modeling career, Gabbriette shares a professional connection with Healy — she served as the lead vocalist of the punk rock band Nasty Cherry, which was formed by English pop singer Charli XCX, with whom Healy has also collaborated.

She’s a model

Gabbriette originally moved to Los Angeles to pursue ballet but ended up getting cast as a dancer in Blood Orange’s music videos. She was then scouted and became a model, though she told Vogue in May 2023 that her career was far from an overnight success. “I was an unpaid, hard-working model for a very long time,” she explained.

Gabbriette is currently represented by the modeling agency IMG and has worked with brands including Savage X Fenty and Marc Jacobs.

Although she is a successful model now, Gabbriette has said she struggled to fit in growing up.

“The majority of students at my high school were beautiful, strictly white blonde girls, and my sister and I were Hispanic,” she told Vogue. “I was called some pretty awful things. But then I just learned to laugh at it.”

She’s a musician

In 2018, British pop singer Charli XCX hand-picked the members of a new punk rock band called Nasty Cherry, with her pal Gabbriette fronting the group as lead singer. The other members included guitarist Chloe Chaidez, drummer Debbie Knox-Hewson and bassist Georgia Somary.

Nasty Cherry has released three EPs and, in 2019, appeared in the Netflix series I’m With the Band: Nasty Cherry, which documented the formation of the band.

She’s known for her ‘90s grunge aesthetic

As her modeling career picked up speed, Gabbriette developed a distinct signature look. Her ‘90s-inspired grunge aesthetic is characterized by the model’s trademark razor-thin eyebrows, dark eyeliner and leather-loving wardrobe.

“Now I know exactly what I want, I can do my makeup in five minutes,” Gabbriette told Vogue. “It’s eyeliner, eyeshadow, and then I put my eyebrows on. I have this little eyebrow pencil that I bought at CVS.”

The model also told the publication that her fashion inspiration ranges from ‘50s pin-up stars to dominatrixes.

“I have a ton of leather jackets and leather pants – I’ve been trying to find the perfect pair,” Gabbriette said. “I’ve finally just learned to dress for myself. I used to really dress up for other people but now I just wear what I feel comfortable in.”

She and Healy were first spotted together in September 2023

In early September 2023, Gabbriette was photographed kissing and hugging Healy in N.Y.C. The pair strolled holding hands around Soho and Washington Square Park.

Later that month, they appeared together at various New York Fashion Week events, and Gabbriette attended one of Healy’s concerts. The model shared a video of the show on her Instagram Story days after Healy left a series of red heart emojis on one of her posts.

Four months earlier, in June 2023, multiple sources confirmed that Healy had ended his brief romance with Taylor Swift. Gabbriette was most recently linked to fellow model Levi Dylan, son of Jakob Dylan and grandson of Bob Dylan.

The couple haven't talked about how they met, but it’s possible that they were connected through Charli XCX. The British singer, who recruited Gabbriette to Nasty Cherry, is engaged to The 1975 drummer George Daniel. Charli and Healy also collaborated on No Rome's 2021 single "Spinning," which featured The 1975.

In March 2024, Gabbriette told High Snobiety that she isn't bothered by the comments that Healy's fans leave on her Instagram posts now that their relationship is public.

“I don’t give a s---. I think it’s hilarious. Go for it. Have fun. People have a lot to say, You don’t know me at all," she said.

Her cooking videos have gone viral

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Gabbriette began posting cooking videos online and quickly gained attention for her food content. One particularly viral post was her recreation of Erewhon’s famous grain-free vegan blackout cake.

Gabbriette has credited her parents for her love of cooking.

“Growing up, my family was always cooking,” she told Vogue. “My mum is Mexican and my dad is German so there were all these different cultures colliding in our house ... My mum would always be putting a twist on a recipe and my dad would be grilling something or making sauerkraut.”

She continued, “Family meals were a big part of our life, we’d sit down together after school without our phones and talk about our day, and the cooking process was always a big part of that.”

Gabbriette admitted that while she did not expect her recipe videos to blow up, she was enjoying the virality and was even working on a cookbook.

“Social media is always changing,” she told the outlet. “It’s so unpredictable. But for now it’s working.”

Healy’s mom has interacted with her on Instagram

Healy isn't the only member of his family commenting on Gabbriette’s Instagram photos — the indie rocker's mom has chimed in too.

In October 2023, the model shared a photo of herself on Instagram wearing a leather apron, which she created in collaboration with R&M Leathers, and a matching leather thong.

The singer's mom, English actor Denise Welch, seemingly showed her approval.

“That’s exactly how I hope to look in mine when it arrives!!” she commented on the post along with a few thumbs-up and heart emojis.

In February 2024, Gabbriette appeared in a family photo that Welch shared on Instagram. Healy, his younger brother, Louis Healy, and Gabbriette went to see Welch's new play, The Gap, together.

"Lovely to have the family in to see mum at work!!! @hopemilltheatre #thegap ❤️❤️❤️❤️," Welch wrote in her caption.

They got engaged in May 2024

Healy and Gabbriette announced their engagement in June 2024 after attending Charli XCX's Brat show in Brooklyn. Gabbriette posted a photo of herself wearing a ring featuring a black gem surrounded by pavé diamonds around both the stone and band on her Instagram Stories.

"MARRYING THE 1975 IS VERY BRAT," she captioned the image, tagging Healy's Instagram account leading him to reshare the post.

Healy's mother, actress Denise Welch, confirmed the news on Loose Women the following morning.

"I have known for a few weeks that Matty got engaged ... They went over to see their friends Charli and George in New York and I woke up this morning to the fact they’ve put it on Instagram," she said on the UK chat show.

She continued, "I couldn't be more thrilled. We couldn't be happier — she is everything I would want in a daughter-in-law. I'm thrilled."

Gabbriette was first spotted wearing the ring in late May.
