The Mayor of Symi has given an extensive update to shed light on the current theory surrounding the unfortunate event after a body, believed to be that of missing TV star Michael Mosley, was tragically found. The body was discovered in a rocky area beside Agia Marina on Symi this Sunday.

It follows a major search for the TV doctor after he went missing on the Greek island, where he had been holidaying with his wife Dr Clare Bailey, on Wednesday. Now the mayor of the island has said it is assumed that Dr Mosley met his end when he fell around 10 metres (32ft) off a cliff into the ocean.

In a statement, Mayor Eleftherios Papakaloudoukas revealed: "During our search, and as we were approaching a cave next to the Agia Marina beach, we were shooting along the coastline with cameras."

He continued: "We saw an object next to a fence on the beach and when we zoomed in we realised that it was Michael Mosley's body. He had probably fallen from a short cliff of about 10 metres."

Formal idenitification of the body is yet to take place to discover if it is indeed the missing TV doctor. Rescue teams had been scouring the area for any sight of Dr Mosley since Wednesday.

Drones had been used as part of the mission, as well as sniffer dogs. It had been originally feared that he had fallen on a walk from a beach along a coastal path back to the village of Pedi.

But the focus of the search turned to the rocky and steep area near a network of caves locally referred to as The Abyss.
