McDonald's: Man fighting for life after setting 'himself on fire' outside drive-thru in Liverpool

The man, in his 40s, is suffering from serious burns after the incident in the Walton area of the city.

A man is fighting for his life after he "set himself on fire" outside a McDonald's in Liverpool.

Merseyside police and fire crews were called to the restaurant in Queens Drive, in Walton, after reports for the concern for the safety of a man at around 5.50am on Thursday.

At the scene they found a man, in his 40s, needed urgent medical attention for serious burns.

The man was taken to hospital where he now remains in a critical condition. Police have launched an investigation into the incident and a cordon remains in place surrounding the McDonald's, which was closed after the incident

Witnesses at the scene said the man "set himself on fire" and detectives have confirmed to the Liverpool Echo they are not looking for anyone else in connection to the incident.

Forensic officers have been seen taking pictures outside of the restaurant, near the car park and drive thru area. Officers have also been spotted speaking to members of McDonald's staff and taking witness statements.

What have police said?

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We received a report of a concern for safety of a man in Walton this morning, Thursday 26 October. At around 5.50am it was reported a man, aged in his 40s, needed urgent medical attention for serious burns injuries.

"Emergency services attended and he has been taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition. An investigation is ongoing and a cordon remains in place at the scene."

What has McDonald's said?

A spokesperson for the fast food chain told the Liverpool Echo: "We can confirm that an incident occurred earlier this morning at our Queen’s Drive restaurant.

"We are offering support to our restaurant team, and will assist the police in their enquiries."
