A mechanic has shared how motorists could 'double the life of your engine' by simply ditching a modern car feature.

Scotty Kilmer, who has been tinkering with engines for more than half a century, says that there's a nifty feature on your vehicle which could actually be doing more harm than good.

Taking to his YouTube channel, the pro told viewers that the automatic stop/start system should be switched off completely. Despite fuel-saving and emission cutting power, Scotty is convinced that the new bit of tech is wearing engines out faster.

He explained: "[Turning it off] is a smart thing to do. Start/stop technology is the dumbest thing that's come out in years. 97% of the wear happens when you start the car so do you want to keep starting and stopping it? Not if you want your car to last longer."

The Star reports in order to switch off the feature, you simply look for a dashboard button with an 'A' wrapped in a looped arrow. When you've hit the spot, a light will pop up to say that the feature has been terminated.

And Scotty's piece of advice sparked debates online, with one driver sharing: "I recently was driving a rental with this feature and after realizing it wasn't the car stalling at every red light I realized what was going on. I thought this was... worse for the engine than just idling."

Meanwhile, another added: "I test-drove a car once with that function and I found it annoying."
