While the character of Freddie from The Talented Mr Ripley might make you think of Philip Seymour Hoffman, there's a new suspicious friend in town, thanks to the Netflix adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's novel. Here is everything you need to know about Eliot Sumner, who plays Freddie in Ripley, from their famous parents to their previous projects.

In case you missed it, Netflix have created a TV mini-series based on the story of grifter Tom Ripley, who is willing to do whatever it takes to try and gain the life he desires. The series kicks off in New York, where a rich business man - Herbert Greenleaf - asks Tom to go to Italy to find his son, Dickie, and try to convince him to come home.

Only, while he's there, Tom realises he doesn't want to befriend Dickie, but instead be him. Agh. His plan is going pretty swimmingly, until he meets Freddie Miles, one of Dickie's old friends, who is incredibly suspicious of what's going on.

What did Eliot Sumner say about playing Freddie?

Speaking to Netflix about what drew them to the role, Eliot said, "Freddie is this posh boarding school guy living abroad who’s unapologetically well off, and most of all he’s everything Tom Ripley hates. I found that very, very fun to play."

They continued, "This was my second big acting job, and Andrew has obviously been doing this for a really long time. It takes me a minute to get comfortable with people because I’m quite a shy person. There were days where I felt like Tom Ripley, and I had this imposter syndrome of: ‘I don’t know what I’m doing here.'"

Eliot Sumner shared their pronouns back in 2015

In 2015, Eliot opened up to Evening Standard about their desire to not use pronouns, clarifying that instead they refer to themselves as just “musician”.

They continued, "I don't believe in any specifications. I think forever I was trying to figure out maybe... what I am. But I don’t think anyone should feel pressured to have any kind of label or tag on them. We should treat everybody the same… Me, I don’t like to be put down to a specific thing. We’re all human beings."

Who is Eliot Sumner dating?

It's not known whether Eliot is with anyone right now. In 2015, they were dating Austrian model Lucie von Alten, telling Evening Standard they were introduced by a mutual friend. In the same interview, Eliot said they had never discussed their sexuality publicly, because "no one’s ever asked." On whether they came out to their parents, they added, "I didn’t! They knew already. So I didn’t need to. I’ve never come out to anyone. Friends always knew and I always knew."

Back in 2021, they were dating model Frankie Herbert, the daughter of Harry Herbert and granddaughter of the 7th Earl of Carnarvon. But in 2023, Frankie posted a photo of her kissing someone else during London's Pride Parade, so it's unclear whether they're still together.
