Police chase hits 135mph after post office burglary

Two men have been arrested after a post office had its door smashed and cash stolen.

Sussex Police said the men were arrested in the early hours of Tuesday morning after a high-speed pursuit.

This came after officers were alerted to the break-in at about 3am at The Green, Catsfield, near Battle.

A door to the premises was smashed to gain entry and cash was stolen from inside.

Sussex Police said the vehicle used was traced by Kent Police’s Roads Policing Unit travelling north towards Surrey.

During the police pursuit, the vehicle reached speeds of 135mph before the two men attempted to flee from the vehicle on the M25.

One man was arrested while another ran across the motorway.

He was traced to woodlands by the National Police Air Service helicopter, helped by the Metropolitan Police, and arrested, police said.

Both men, one aged 38 from Sutton, and the other aged 42 from Lewisham, are in custody at this time.

Chief Inspector Chris Veale from Sussex Police Operations Command said: “We responded to a report of a break-in at a village Post Office, where a quantity of cash was taken.

“Thanks to the work of officers and colleagues from Kent Police, Surrey Police, and the Metropolitan Police the suspects were detained.

“It demonstrates exemplary professionalism and teamwork across the police forces.”

Witnesses or anyone with relevant information such as CCTV footage is asked to report it to Sussex Police online, quoting serial 117 of 11/06.
