Meryl Streep and Martin Short Surprise Broadway Cast of “Merrily We Roll Along” Following Romance Denial
'The Only Murders in the Building' costars enjoyed the show in New York City on Saturday night
Meryl Streep and Martin Short hit the Great White Way together!
The actor, 73, and the actress, 74, attended a showing of Merrily We Roll Along on Broadway on Saturday night. They were spotted sitting together at the Hudson Theatre by a fan in the audience.
After the show, Streep and Short joined the cast to offer their congratulations.
“Wonderful! You were wonderful,” Streep said in a video posted by Krystal Joy Brown, who plays Gussie Carnegie in the show. “What a show. What a show. It must be a joy, I hope it is. That was … wow.”
The Only Murders in the Building stars also posed for a photo with the whole cast. During the moment, Short began to sing “Old Friends” from the show, before Streep and the rest of the cast joined in.

Jonathan Groff and Daniel Radcliffe, two of the musical's stars, could be seen singing along and posing in the video, with Groff, 38, kneeling below Short, who held him by the shoulders.
The Harry Potter alum, 34, meanwhile, was on the outskirts of the group and encouraged other cast members to join the shot.
“This moment was not on my bingo card for this overall insane situation we’ve found ourselves in,” wrote Max Rackenberg — who plays Frank Jr. — on Instagram as he shared the sweet video.
“Meryl & Martin Short?!?! I am absolutely floored,” Brown wrote on her Instagram Story as she shared a photo from backstage with the pair. “I performed for these two legends and they were so kind & effusive about our show and said some kind words to me I will NEVER forget.”
Another one of the show’s stars, Corey Mach, posted on X (formerly Twitter), writing, "Today is the day my beautiful MERRILY cast has been waiting for for almost two years… MERYL IS HERE (with Martin!) 😭#MeryllyWeRollAlong.”

The outing between Streep and Short took place amid speculation that the actors are romantically involved, despite continued refusal on their parts. In January, a rep for Short confirmed to PEOPLE that they are "just very good friends, nothing more." (The denial came following news that Streep and her husband of 45 years, Don Gummer, had been separated for six years.)
Short later said of his relationship with Streep: "We're not a couple, we are just very close friends," on an episode of Club Random with Bill Maher.

The pair's Broadway outing also comes after Streep, Short and their Only Murders costars Steve Martin and Selena Gomez returned to filming the hit Hulu series earlier this month. The fourth season will be set in Los Angeles rather than New York, as the previous three seasons were.
In an interview with Deadline, Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich revealed that season 4 will see the core trio take a trip to Los Angeles before returning to The Arconia in New York City.
Streep was previously confirmed to be returning to the show as Broadway star Loretta Durkin because she "had a tremendous time" working on season 3, 20th Television president Karey Burke said on THR's TV's Top 5 podcast in February.
Several new stars are joining too, including Molly Shannon, Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria and Kumail Nanjiani.
